Plasma Mass Spectrometry Laboratory

Calendar (Signup here)

The Plasma Mass Spectrometry (PMS) Laboratory at UNC Chapel Hill is equipped with a recently obtained Quadrupole-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Agilent 7900 Q-ICP-MS) for the elemental analyses of most liquid and solid materials on Earth. Recently, we have developed new methods to analyze Li isotopes with low sample size (<5ng Li) (Liu and Li, 2019).

The ICP-MS system has several key features that distinguish it as a leader in high-resolution elemental and isotopic analysis: (1) high precision and accuracy; (2) high matrix tolerance (can measure up to 25% total dissolved solids); (3) broad mass range; (4) low detection limits; and (5) rapid analysis. Further information about Agillent 7900 Q-ICP-MS is given at http://www.agilent.com/en-us/products/icp-ms/icp-ms-systems/7900-icp-ms.

The PMS laboratory is equiped with one chemical exhaust hood and three HEPA-filtered clean bench-top workstations. In addition, a new water purify system (Millipore) has been installed to produce 18 MΩ water on demand.
